We can classify Universities in four categories:
Central Universities: Central universities or union universities in India are public universities established by an Act of Parliament and are under the purview of the Department of Higher Education in the Ministry of Education. In general, universities in India are recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC)
State Universities: State universities are public universities run by the state government of each of the states and territories of India, and are usually established by a local legislative assembly act.
Deemed Universities: In India, a deemed university, or a deemed-to-be-university, is an accreditation granted to higher educational institutions by the Department of Higher Education under the Ministry of Education.
According to the Ministry of Education, “An Institution of Higher Education, other than universities, working at a very high standard in specific area of study, can be declared by the Central Government on the advice of the University Grants Commission (UGC), as an Institution ‘Deemed-to-be-university’. Institutions that are ‘deemed-to-be-university’ enjoy the academic status and privileges of a university.”
Private Universities: Private universities are approved by the UGC. They can grant degrees but they are not allowed to have off-campus affiliated colleges.
